Since 1983, thousands of physiotherapists, doctors, chiropractors, massage therapists and other health professionals worldwide have applied trigger point therapy in their practice.The proposed etiology of Travell trigger points (TrPs) has undergone a fundamental revision in recent years.
It changed the understanding and treatment approach towards chronic pain. This book was a breakthrough in the world of rheumatology, orthopedics and physiotherapy. In 1983, Simons and Travell published their work entitled "Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction - The Trigger Point Manual". Although deifications of TrPs are used different disciplines, the most commonly accepted definition maintain that "a TrP is a hyper irritable spot in the taut band of a skeletal muscle that is painful on compression, stretch, overload or contraction of the tissue which usually responds with the a referred pain that is perceived distant from the spot. Myofascial pain can mimic other pain diagnoses such as neuropathic pain, complex regional pain syndrome, systemic diseases, tinnitus, and certain metabolic, parasitic, and nutritional disorder, among others.
